Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
