The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

He also took part, raising over £100k on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds helped locations that were facing imminent closure due to issues stemming from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from performances in big venues helps the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to give his honor funds to charitable organizations.

In they earned the award in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would donate their winnings to the charity the charity.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite split her bounty between several charities, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," she told outlets.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the community center that supported their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners they donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," said artist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued two small stages in that region, by bringing them into public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
